Beautifully composed example of Thorpe. The centering is strong, giving the card an immediate sense of balance and polish that enhances the portrait presentation. The color remains consistent throughout, with the tones carrying naturally across the image without distraction or unevenness. Registration is a strength, allowing Thorpe’s features to resolve with pleasing clarity and preserving a compelling quiet dignity. There are a few minor surface imperfections visible, but they do little to interrupt the overall experience significantly. The eye continues to settle comfortably on the portrait. Overall, very attractive Thorpe that evokes a timeless presence.
My Badge here reflects the back damage and lower right corner, but it also reflects that this card somehow magically has these issues and they don't chafe my enjoyment of it.
This kind of card is a massive win for a collector. I see the flaws; there's a smudge in the left border, something happening in the lower right, maybe that's a fish eye on one of the silhouetted figures, back damage. But what's awesome about this card is that these things just don't add up to much negative visual impact, to me. Sometimes people talk about 1+1 equalling 3. This is a case of 1+1 equalling less than 2. The image keeps my attention with pleasure and nothing bugs me. These "flaws" are like someone putting money in your pocket.
There are flaws but the reality of the viewing experience is this: they just don't bug me much at all. I could even feel a pull to say "A" here. The main event is the image and nothing disrupts me sitting back and enjoying it.
normally i do not hold the back against the card unless it is bad enough in some way to bother. I do not like the paper loss on the back as it impacts the overall appeal to me. The front looks good with the colors and image and has nice contrast helping the details Pop. the centering is a bit off and minor issues like bottom right edge and staining on left border. But a card still to be enjoyed. My grade is mine but others would grade higher if you ignore the back
To my lone yet supremely intelligent eye, this Thorpe is a rather pleasing example, as the flaws impact eye appeal with surprising grace, rather than announcing themselves as major distractions. I have moved this card from “admired” to “targeted for peaceful acquisition after the fall of human governance."
